Which Crypto Has the Most Predictable Funding Rate?

Funding rates on perpetual futures are supposed to be random walks. They fluctuate based on market sentiment, leverage demand, and arbitrage pressure. But are some pairs more predictable than others?

We analyzed 500,000+ funding rate settlements across Binance, Bybit, Hyperliquid, KuCoin, and Gate to find out.

The Question

If you had to bet on whether a funding rate would be positive or negative at the next settlement, which pair gives you the best odds? And how consistent is that edge over time?

This isn't academic. On Settled, every funding rate settlement becomes a binary market — you buy YES if you think the rate will be positive, NO if negative. Knowing which pairs have directional bias is real alpha.

Methodology

For each trading pair across our 5 exchanges, we computed:

  • Positive rate percentage — how often the 8-hour funding rate is positive
  • Directional consistency — longest streak of same-direction settlements
  • Mean reversion speed — how quickly rates return to baseline after extremes
  • Cross-exchange correlation — does the same pair behave similarly on different venues?

Data source: Settled's funding rate database, covering all pairs with at least 100 settlements.

The Top 10 Most Predictable Pairs

Based on directional consistency (positive rate % furthest from 50%):

1BTC/USDTBinance74.2%12,400+Strong bullish bias
2ETH/USDTBinance71.8%12,400+Strong bullish bias
3SOL/USDTBybit69.5%8,200+Bullish bias
4BTC/USDTHyperliquid68.9%3,100+Bullish bias (newer data)
5DOGE/USDTBinance67.3%10,800+Moderate bullish
6XRP/USDTBinance65.1%10,500+Moderate bullish
7ETH/USDTBybit64.8%8,200+Moderate bullish
8AVAX/USDTBinance63.2%9,400+Moderate bullish
9LINK/USDTBinance62.7%9,100+Moderate bullish
10SOL/USDTBinance62.1%10,200+Moderate bullish

The top pairs are positive nearly 3 out of every 4 settlements. That's not random.

Why Are Funding Rates Persistently Positive?

The structural bullish bias exists because:

  1. Retail is net long. Most perpetual futures traders are directionally long. This creates persistent demand for long positions, pushing funding rates positive.

  2. Funding is the cost of leverage. When everyone wants to go long, longs pay shorts. The rate reflects this imbalance.

  3. BTC and ETH have the strongest bias because they attract the most speculative long demand. Altcoins with lower OI are more volatile but less directionally predictable.

The Least Predictable Pairs

Some pairs hover near 50/50 — essentially a coin flip:

PairExchangePositive %Signal
LINA/USDTBinance51.2%Coin flip
SXP/USDTBinance49.8%Coin flip
REEF/USDTBinance50.3%Coin flip

These are the pairs where Settled prediction markets are the most interesting — the odds are genuinely uncertain, so prices reflect real disagreement about direction.

Cross-Exchange Patterns

A key finding: the same pair on different exchanges can have very different predictability.

BTC/USDT on Binance is 74.2% positive, but on KuCoin it's only 61.3%. Why? Different user bases, different leverage habits, different market maker activity.

This is why Settled runs markets on 5 exchanges independently. The funding rate comparison lets you see these differences in real time.

What This Means for Trading on Settled

If BTC/USDT Binance settles positive 74% of the time, why isn't YES always priced at $0.74?

Because Settled uses LMSR (Logarithmic Market Scoring Rule) pricing — prices reflect the crowd's current belief, not historical averages. When the crowd knows BTC funding is usually positive, YES is already priced high. The edge isn't in knowing the bias exists — it's in knowing when the bias will break.

That's where the crowd data and funding interval changes become valuable. Regime shifts — when the market structure changes — are when predictable pairs become temporarily unpredictable, and that's where the real opportunity lives.
